  2. Service Learning Service learning is defined as a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community.

  3. Freshman Year Experience Freshman Year Experience is a great program for freshman at Valdosta State University. It helps the freshman meet new people, adjust to campus life, and become active in the community for a minimum of ten hours.

  4. The Crescent • The ladies who help maintain the Crescent needed assistance in moving things because they are too elderly. • Here I helped move large tables, chairs, and replaced lights that were burned out.

  6. Camping for Cancer • Sigma Alpha Epsilon held a three day event called Camping for Cancer. • Basically, people camped out in the SAE yard and saved all the cans they drank out of so they could cash them in. • The money went to Relay for Life.

  7. Camping for Cancer • I had to help pick up all of the cans everyday. • I also had to take the tabs off all of them so they could sell them too and get more money for cancer programs. • We also had to crush all the cans.

  12. Learning Experience I learned… • teamwork • responsibility • confidence.

  13. Positives • I had a feeling of accomplishment because I assisted those who are less fortunate than myself. • I met a lot of new people. • I bettered my community.

  14. Negatives • The only real negative of community service is that it is time consuming.

  15. Why is Community Service Important? Community service is important because it teaches people responsibility, helps people in need, and betters the community.
