  1. Look at the following images. They are all related to Al-Qaeda.What can we infer (work out) from each source about Al-Qaeda?

  2. Al-Qaeda • Know the aims of Al-Qaeda and the methods they have used. • Be able to explain what Al-Qaeda is, recognising that it is more than just a terrorist group. • Assess the effectiveness of Al-Qaeda and the importance of its leadership

  3. Abdullah Azzam • Radical preacher who called for defensive jihad to be used to help the Mujahidin fight against the Soviet Union following the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. • He was the teacher and mentor of Osama bin Laden.

  4. Can you remember the aims of al-Qaeda? • Destroy American influence in all Muslim nations, especially Saudi Arabia • Destroy Israel • Destabilise and over-throw pro-Western governments in Muslim states

What are the strengths of al-Qaeda? • Simple/powerful beliefs • Difficult to combat • Effective leadership • Good use of modern technologies • Loyal, committed members and well trained • Secure bases • Generous funding from supporters in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and money from Afghan drug trade • Inadequately prepared enemies i.e USA Using the information on page 172 find examples to add to each of these strengths.

  7. Al-Qaeda in action 1993 - Attack on World Trade Centre in New York carried out by RamziYousef, a Pakistani militant who was inspired by Osama bin Laden’s teachings. 6 dead and $300 mill damage. Not directly connected to al-Qaeda but Ramzi did receive training in Afghanistan. November 1995 Attack on Saudi National Guard and US troops training them in Saudi Arabia by group of men inspired by bin Laden. 1998 - Osama bin Laden announces formation of World Islamic Front and it’s intentions. 7th August 1998 - US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania hit by truck bombs. Nairobi attack especially well planned with al-Qaeda operatives in area for years, killed 213 and injured 4,600. October 2000 – USS Cole attacked killing 17 US sailors 11th September 2001 – Attacks in New York on twin towers of the World Trade Centre. 3,000 people killed.
