  2. Family The importance of the home atmosphere in personality development cannot be underestimated. Conditions are present at home which help to stimulate or impair growth.

  4. A Healthy Family…Open Communication– one feels listened to and able to listen to others in family. Family members are encouraged to think independently and conflicts can be resolved.Affirmation – family members take an active interest in what each other are doing.Trust – man and woman live with a relationship which allows them to believe in each other. Children are allowed to make mistakes without feeling their world will end. Environment builds self esteem.A Sense of Tradition– it binds the family together and gives a sense of our roots.Shared Leisure Time– time spent together fosters talk and appreciation of one another.A Sense of Right and Wrong– Children are made responsible for their behaviour and know WHY things are right or wrong. Teach key values – respect.A Sense of Responsibility– families function best when all members take responsibility to help each other. This also helps our self esteem because we are empowered.A Shared Religious Vision– It helps when families are united by a common set of religious beliefs and values about the ‘meaning of life’

  5. Dysfunctional or Unhealthy Families 1. Authoritarian2. It has a one person focus3. There are specific rules4. Lacks esteem5. “Stay with…and be like us”

When a child sees constant conflict in the home, grows up in a physically or psychologically abusive environment, or is overprotected; he or she experiences difficulty in adjusting to life. • Such difficulty may include exhibiting behaviour which is “too mature for their age”, or becoming disruptive.
