  9. 1991 University of California Berkeley Asha for Education was founded by three graduate students

  10. Our Mission: To catalyze socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children

  17. Asha Philadelphia Projects • Asha Samajik Vidyalaya, Bihar • Aasra Sewa Sansthan, Uttar Pradesh

Asha Samajik Vidyalaya, Gonwara,Bihar • Project adopted by Asha Philly in December 2005. • A community school for children from Musaharcommunity. • Currently 52 children are enrolled in Gonwara school. Two additional centers have been opened up. • These children are the first generation school goers in this community. • Focus is on facilitating enrollment of children to the govt. schools. • Within the past year and a half: • Children have learnt to read and write in Hindi and basic English. • Children have learnt simple mathematical operations. • Children have also been getting opportunities for learning arts & crafts

AASRA Sewa Sansthan, Uttar Pradesh • Project adopted in 2005. • Two non-formal education centres for children of Musahar community (Jogapur and Mankaiyaan, close to Varanasi). • Currently 40 children are enrolled in each of the two centers. • Focus is on facilitating enrollment of children to the nearby Primary school in Kansraipur. • Through links with the primary school Aasra helps these children make use of govt. schemes like mid day meals. • Aasra has also been working to keep children away from intoxicants.
