  2. RUBRIC = • A rubric is a scoring tool used to assess student performance that is linked to specific learning objectives.

  3. Purpose Rubrics aim for: • Accurate and fair assessment, • Indicating the way to proceed with subsequent learning/teaching.

  4. The term rubric is derived from the Latin term rubrica that means, “red earth”. It came to refer to indications written in red ink within manuscripts of various forms during the middle ages to indicate how a hymn was to be sung or a service conducted. History of the Term RUBRIC

  5. Components of a Rubric • Dimensions • Levels of performance • Criteria articulating gradations of quality for each dimension, and related to intended learning objectives

  6. Optional Rubric Components • Comment section • Total column • Grading range for earned points • Reference to Standards/Performance Indicators • Weighted Dimensions

  7. Rubric USE • For authentic/significant processes, performances, and products found in the real world • With student input during creation or editing • Before (Diagnostic), during (Formative) and after students work (Summative).

  8. In a good rubric, the criteria for assessment represent important aspects of learning, not just what is easiest to count, see and score.
