  2. The Internet - Good or bad ? • Before the break – Discuss pros and cons. • Break for tea or coffee and biscuits • After the break – Some suggested tools for the citizen, not consumer.

  3. The Internet - Good or bad ? • Throughout history mankind has created tools and technology that changed the world. Are today’s any different in terms of impact on society? • The early Stone Age started with man using hand held flint stones. It then expanded as he learnt to attach them to sticks for use as spears, axes, knives, arrows and more. This age was overtaken by the Bronze Age which in turn was overtaken by the Iron Age and so on. • In later periods there was the invention of writing or script, followed by paper, followed by printing. • The industrial revolution ‘started’ with steam engines to pump out mines, which led to steam locomotives, then passenger trains and railways, and then the telegraph. • Now it is the microchip, programming, electronic storage and telecommunications that together make up The Internet. • At each step along the way there were winners and losers as well as those who for a whole variety of reasons opposed the changes and tried to stop them. • Also at each step came the need for adjustments in society and new regulations to govern the technology; Speed limits for roads, newspaper licenses, gun laws, drugs controls, etc.

  25. The Internet - Good or bad ? In conclusion. Is the Internet good or bad? I think that, as with all technologies, it is what you do with it that counts.
