  3. Hadith Qudsi (Holy Hadith) Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "ALLAH said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; (obligatory deeds).... ...and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (voluntary deeds) until I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection, I will protect him..." [Bukhari] Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers

  4. Their Significance • Makes up for any deficiencies in the obligatory prayers • Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet said: "The first thing that the people will be called to account for on the Day of Resurrection will be the prayers. Our Lord will say to the angels although He knows better: 'Look into the salah of my servant to see if he observed it perfectly or been negligent in it. So if he observed it perfectly it will be recorded to his credit, but if he had been negligent in it in any way, Allah would say: See if My servant has any supererogatory prayers. Then if he has any supererogatory prayers, Allah would say: Make up the deficiency in My servant's obligatory prayer with his supererogatory prayers.' Thereafter all his actions will be examined in like manner" [Abu Dawood] Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers

  5. Their Significance • A source of elevation for you • The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Ask (anything)." Rabi'ah said: "I ask of you to be your companion in paradise." The Prophet said: “Anything else?" Rabi'ah said: "That is it." The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam) said to him: "Then help me by making many prostrations (i.e., supererogatory prayers)." [Muslim] Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers

  6. Offering Nawafil Prayers in One's House • A source of light for you in your homes • The Messenger of Allah said: "The nawafilsalah of a man in his house are a light; whoever wishes should lighten up his house." [Ahmad] • The Prophet said: "Make some of your prayers in your houses and do not turn your houses into graves." [Ahmad and Abu Dawood] • The Messenger of Allah said: "A person's salah in his house is better than his salah in my mosque, except for the fardsalah." [Abu Dawood] Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers

  7. Elongating the Nawafil Prayers • It is preferred to elongate the nawafil prayers • "The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam) would stand and pray until his feet or shanks swelled. When he was asked about it, he said: 'Should I not be a thankful slave?"' [Abu Dawood] Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers

  8. Making Nawafil Prayers While Sitting • Sitting during nawafil prayers is allowed • 'Alqamah asked 'Aishah: "How did the Prophet perform two rak'at while sitting?" She replied: "He would recite while sitting and then when he wished to make ruku', he would stand and bow." [Muslim] Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers

  9. Different Types of Nawafil • The nawafil are those prayers which are in addition to the fard salah, as prayed by the Prophet. • Nawafil may be divided into two types: general and specific prayers. • The specific nawafil prayers are referred to as al-Sunan ar-Ratibah, or the sunnah prayers that have a specific order, number, and so on. These include the sunnah prayers of Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. Fiqh us-Sunnah- Supererogatory Prayers
