  2. Background: • Education in Indonesia is expensive for most Indonesians since the economic crisis • Education institutions try to use education funds efficiently • Budget for proctor can be used for other useful activities 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

  3. Assumption: • 2-hour test • 6 subjects for each student • 4 tests in each semester • US$ 1.00 = Rp. 7,500.00 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

  4. Data classification criteria: • Other costs (budget for snack, transportation, etc.) • Average cost per hour: 2,000; 2,500; 3,000 (in Rupiahs) 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

  5. University A • Total average students: 8,000 • Average cost per hour: Rp. 3,000.00 • Ratio proctor to students = 1:20 Total cost = Rp. 57,600,000.00 or US$ 7,680.00 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

  6. University B • Total average students: 4,400 • Average cost per hour: Rp. 2,500.00 • Ratio proctor to students = 1:30 Total cost = Rp. 20,5000,000.00 or US$ 2,750.00 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

  7. University C • Total average students: 8,500 • Average cost per hour: Rp. 2,000.00 • Ratio proctor to students = 1:30 • Average of other cost (snacks): Rp. 41,000,000.00 Total cost = Rp. 82,000,000.00 or US$ 11,000.00 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

Analysis • Universities use proctors to prevent students from cheating • There are two alternatives in handling this problem: to develop new teaching method and to develop students’ mentality • Did the developed countries have the same problem long time ago? • GPA-oriented employers for new employees and parents’ ambition can cause students’ cheating problem. 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

Conclusions: • Developing new teaching method will give a big impact on education in Indonesia and other developing countries with the same problem • To fix mentality problem among students is a big problem in Indonesia, since it needs changing in all aspects in all range of education • Budget for proctors can be used effectively, i.e. to support students with financial problem 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education

Conclusions: (continued) • Comparison study at developed countries for the same problem must be done soon by by developing countries, i.e. how they overcome the same problem • Employers in Indonesia need to change their paradigm from GPA point of view to professional point of view • We need to develop new program to improve parents’ awareness in their role in children education. 2nd Global Congress for Engineering Education
