  1. The Adversary

  2. TEXT: Genesis 4 • The account of Cain and Abel gives us an insight into Satan’s opposition to God’s plan of redemption because:

  3. I. Cain refused blood atonement • A. Satan’s attempt throughout history has been to deny the need for blood atonement—we will see this each week. • B. Apparently the concept of blood atonement had been established by God in teaching and example to Adam and his family (Gen 3:21)

  4. C. The words “sin [offering] lies at the door” indicates that Cain understood what was the proper means of atonement for sin (Gen 4:7 cf Ex 29:36; 30:10). In addition,God makes clear that Cain has a choice; if for a sin offering, then “it’s desire is for you, but you must master it [make a sovereign decision—you are in charge as to choice]. If for sin, then in the same way, “it’s desire is for you, but you must master [overcome] it” (Cf Rev 12:11) • D. Denial of the blood atonement is characterized in Scripture as the “way of Cain” cf Jude 11

  5. II. Cain refused God’s Word • A. God admonished Cain regarding his sacrifice—an evidence of His grace (Gen 4:6-7) • B. Cain refused to hear God’s Word and refused God’s grace (Gen 4:6-7) • C. Satan always questions the authority of God’s Word and denies God’s grace

  6. III. Cain chose his own way • A. Satan has always encouraged man to choose his own way rather than God’s way (Is 53:6) • B. Cain’s choice caused anti-social behavior (Gen 4:8)and caused him to be a social outcast (Gen 4:14) • C. Cain’s choice caused God’s judgment (Gen 4:10-12) • D. Cain’s choice influenced others (Gen 4:23-24
