  2. INTRODUCTION BLOGS WIKIS PODCASTS Are all examples of SOCIAL SOFTWARE To connect, communicate, and collaborate online.

TERM • A blog: a web page with regular diary or journal entries • A wiki: a collaborative web space, consisting of a number of pages that can be edited by any user. • A podcast: an audio or video file that is ‘broadcast’ via the internet and can be downloaded to a computer or mobile device for listening/viewing. The word podcast comes from combining iPod and broadcast.

  4. Why Apply Those Tools in Class? • They can be set up and used by teachers and learners • They can be used to connect learners to other communities of learners; a class in another country • The ideas and content can be generated and created by learners, either individually or collaboratively

  5. BLOGS in LANGUAGE TEACHING Most blogs will allow readers to comment, share common topic, interest or person. Blogroll list of links to other blogs which the blog writer admires, widening the online community. Class blog  an international exchange of information with students in other countries. Edublog  blogs used in education. Tutor blog  blog maintained by a teacher. Student blogs  students set up and maintain their own individual blogs.

  6. How to Start Using Blogs with Learners • Step 1: Setting up a sample blog for your own • Step 2: Setting up student blogs • Step 3: Posting to and visiting blogs • Step 4: Follow up Blogs can be set so that only invited members have commenting privileges which gives some measure of security.

Free Blog Sites • Blogger (http://www.blogger.com) • WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org) • EzBlogWorld (http://ezblogworld.com) • Bahraich Blogs (http://www.bahraichblogs.com) • Getablog (http://www.getablog.net/portal3.php) Audio and Video Blogs… you can use Audacity, Audioblog, or Freevlog.

  8. Wikis in Language Teaching • Is a public website, visitors can add to, delete or change. It is more dynamic, and can have multiple authors. • A wiki has a non-linear structure, and pages may link back and forwards to other pages. • The best known is Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org). Its accuracy is a matter of debate. • For learners, pbwiki (peanut butter wiki) is used.

How to Start Using Wiki with Learners • Step 1: Preparation before Lesson; the teacher sets up the 1st page, outlining the topic of the project, and steps needed to take in the project. • Step 2: (In)famous people: descriptions • Step 3: (In)famous people: corrections, alternative, considerations. • Several free sites: • Pbwiki (www.pbwiki.com) • MediaWiki (www.mediawiki.org) • Wikihost (http://wikihost.org)

  10. Podcasts in Language Teaching • You can listen or watch a topic that interests you whenever you want to. • Usually called Vodcasts or PodClips. • A podcast specifically at teachers and learners of English is Englishcaster (www.englishcaster.com) • Main uses in teaching: • Learners can listen and produce their own podcasts • Lecture podcasts referred as coursecasting

A Class Podcast Project • Step 1: Setting a podcast page, www.podomatic.com • Needs Internet connection, microphone, speakers, headset • Step 2: Creating learner podcasts • Learners can record, listen, and re-record until they’re sure • Step 3: Listening to learner podcasts • Step 4: Follow-up
