  6. Where Do You Find Chemistry? You find it when things mix • Watch Out – You Never Know What Is In A Chemists Flask

  7. So What Is Chemistry • Well, it’s the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. • Ohh, that is like, sooooooo booooring…… • Well wait, the changes we just saw weren’t so bad, maybe chemistry can be cool!!!!

  8. Chemistry Lingo Matter – The stuff everything is made of Atom – A small building block of matter used to make larger substances (They are listed on the periodic table) Periodic Table – Table of atoms or elements (plural) Group – column on the periodic table Period – row on the periodic table

  9. So What’s An Atom Anyhow? • Atoms are small particles that act as building block for larger substances. Think of it like Lego Building Blocks. The Blocks represent atoms and with those you can make castles, air planes, cars, and sky scrapers.

  10. Atoms • Atoms are composed of three small particles • Proton – Positive charged particle in center or nucleus of an atom with a mass of 1 amu • Neutron – Neutral charged particle in nucleus of an atom with an mass of 1 amu • Electron – Negative charged particle that is outside and around the nucleus with a mass of 1/1837 amu.

  11. How Do We View Atoms Modern view – electron density Old View – sun and Planets – not correct

  12. How Do We View Atoms • What about size E1 - Hallway E2 – WalMart E3 – Salt Lake E4 – Kansas City Wow, that’s a whole lot of nothing – how can nothing be something? Well it’s all chicken wire!!!
