3. 2007 Urban Greening Initiative • New Year, New Name & Additional Partner • $300,000 program for Requests up to $50,000

4. Overall Goals: • Increase percentage of tree canopy and expand green cover in urban areas • Encourage communities to integrate trees and natural areas into stormwater management & connect green spaces

5. 2006 Community Greening Grantees • City of Baltimore • City of Cumberland • City of Hyattsville • City of Annapolis • Herring Run Watershed Assoc.

Grants Resulted in: • 700+ trees funded by program • Additional 2,000 trees to be planted as a result of funding community involvement efforts • Leveraged Funds from other sources: $386,130 • Leveraged In-kind donations: $223,804 • 5,080 Estimated Volunteer Hours • Completion of two additional Urban Tree Canopy Assessments

7. Eligibility Criteria • Directed to communities that are developing and implementing a comprehensive urban greening program. • Components: • Tree canopy or some type of urban greening assessment • Goal to increase canopy/green areas • Developing an implementation plan

8. Eligible Applicants • MD local governments • Watershed organizations & non-profits • School Systems • Homeowner/Community associations w/ 501(c)(3) status • ** Working in partnership with local governments

9. Eligible Expenses • Project Materials • Monitoring and Maintenance- (simple monitoring only) • Outreach materials • Staff time- that directly supports project related tasks • Benefit rates up to 20% can be submitted

Application Instructions and Criteria • Grant application cover page and project abstract • Project description that addresses program criteria • Stage at in preparing a tree canopy or greening assessment which: • Maps existing canopy/green space • Establishes baseline • Defines targeted geographic priorities for restoration

11. Application Instructions and Criteria (cont.) • Stage of tree canopy/urban greening and/or impervious surface goal. Describe: • Timeframe • Implementation plan • Stage of adoption by local governing body • Local standards/ordinances that conserve forests/reduce IC • Financial commitment • 1: 1 Match Required

Application Instructions and Criteria (cont.) • Plans for maintenance, monitoring and tracking the status of goal implementation • Planting locations • Should connect green space/provide environmental benefits • Trees should be native (where at all possible) • Budget & Deliverables Table • Methods & Occurrence for tracking increases • Include quantifiable info on grants’ contribution

13. Additional Requirements • Matching Requirement: 1:1 Match – can be both cash and in-kind • Community Volunteer Requirement – Grantees required to host a kick-off volunteer planting event

14. Attachments • Summary of assessment, plan and goal • Applicable maps (including maps indicating planting locations) • Letters of support from local government or governing entity

15. Deadlines • Hard copy and electronic applications due by 5:00 pm on July 13, 2007 • Decisions will be made in mid-September

16. What if I just want to plant trees? • If seeking to do a site specific planting consider: • Mini- grant program (rolling deadline & requests of up to $5,000). For tree planting/greening projects on public or community property • Stewardship grant program (July & Dec. deadlines) For large scale riparian buffer plantings on public or community property. • www.chesapeakebaytrust.org.
