  5. IMPROVING COMMODITIES • Enhance the foods available list to support the nutritional needs of recipients • Improve customer appeal of commodities • Provide product in more convenient form

IMPROVING COMMODITIES To help meet recommendations from the 2005 DGAs: • Offering more whole wheat/grain items for SY 2008: • Whole grain macaroni and spaghetti • Brown rice, Quick-cooking brown rice • Trans Fats • Reviewing commodities for trans fats levels • Requiring USDA commodity labels to address trans fats • Working to eliminate trans fats from frozen potato products

IMPROVING COMMODITIES • Lowering sugar • USDA offers canned fruits packed in only juice and water, juice, or light syrup (exception is apple slices packed in water only) • No canned fruits are offered in heavy syrup • Changed spec to require unsweetened applesauce for schools and institutions • Lowering sodium content • All canned vegetables meet FDA’s “Healthy” standard for sodium (≤ 480 mg per serving)

VENA Timeline • Spring 2006 - Final VENA guidance issued. • Summer 2006 - FNS conducts seven regional VENA Staff Competencies Training. • Fall 2006 - WIC State agencies review existing nutrition assessment protocols and identify potential areas for enhancement. • December 15, 2006 - WIC State agencies submit to FNS Regional Offices findings from their review and evaluation of existing assessment protocols. • August 15, 2007 - WIC State agencies, as part of the State Plan, submit VENA implementation plans to FNS Regional offices.. • Fiscal Year 2008-2009 - WIC State agencies revise nutrition assessment policy and procedures and provide necessary staff training, etc., (as described in their FNS approved plans) to implement VENA. • October 1, 2009 - VENA implemented in all WIC State agencies.

WIC Hispanic Breastfeeding Promotion and Education ProjectSeptember 2007 Project Goals: • Develop culturally tailored breastfeeding educational materials in print and video targeted to Hispanic mothers and families • Identify breastfeeding barriers that Hispanic mothers face and dispel myths that may be the result of traditions or inaccurate information; • Identify the primary networks within the Hispanic family structure or extended family that provide breastfeeding support; and • Build on the community health and support networks thatare so significant in the Hispanic culture.
