Map of Kurdish area

The Kurdish people have lived here since 400 BC

Saddam Hussein

  • Took power in Iraq by a Coup d’etat

  • 1980-1988 – Fought in the Iran/Iraq War

  • 1989 – Attacked neighboring country of Kuwait

  • 1990 – Fought in the Persian Gulf War

Hussein’s treatment of the Kurds

  • In late 1980’s Hussein decided to punish the Kurds for supporting Iran in the Iran/Iraq War.

  • He tore down entire Kurdish cities

  • Killed 1000’s of Kurds

  • Put 2 million Kurds into concentration camps

Examples of Brutality

  • One city was dynamited and bulldozed. Only the trees were left standing. 70,000 people were left homeless.

  • Another city was bombed. As the people ran away they were sprayed with nerve gas.

  • In all Hussein killed 300,000 Kurds and put most in unmarked mass graves.

Why does everyone want the land of Kurdistan?

  • Oil reserves are found under the land.

  • The headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are found here.
