  4. PRINTING PRESS Invented by John Gutenberg in 1439 Wooden machine that enhanced speed of printing books Required a lot of manual labor Still terribly slow

  5. First Mechanized Printer Innovated by Daniel Treadwell in 1824 4xs faster than speed of printing press Lacked productivity

  6. Steam-Powered Printer Developed in 1832 by Friedrik Koenig Powered by steam Produced a lot of output Lacked stability and continousness

  7. Rotary Press Designed in 1847 by Richard Hoe Contained rotating cylinders Cylinder could pass continuous rolls of paper regardless of length and size Chaged printing forever

  9. Xerography Defined: Chester Carlson Innovated this idea in 1938 Combines electrostatic printing and photography The way we print today is originated from this • Dry photocopying technique • Uses beams, rotating drums, and dry powder to stick to paper

  10. Xerox Printer First patented in 1975 by IBM World’s 1st laser printer Combines use of laser technology and electrophotography

  11. Ink-Jet Printer Pioneered in 1979 by HP Ink-ject based technology Made up of cartridges filled with ink Ink droplets are impelled from cartridges onto paper

  12. Ink-Jet printers are now most commonly used printing device. Priced from $85-$500 depending on amenities Printers now have the ability to copy photos, scan documents, and even fax Virtual printer: do not have to be physically connected
