  2. Table of Contents • 1 Title • 2 Table of Contents • 3 What do scientists think the surface is like & what is the atmosphere like? • 4 What is the temperature range and what is the diameter? • 5 Does Mercury have moons & how far is Mercury from the sun? • 6 How far is Mercury from Earth & what is the rotation time? • 7 How long is the orbit & how did it get the name Mercury? • 8 other important facts • 9 Bibliography/Webliography

  3. Surface and Atmosphere The surface of Mercury is dry, rocky, and has lots of craters on it. The atmosphere is very thin so meters can crash into Mercury leaving it with craters.

  4. Temperature and Diameter The temperature is from a chilling -280 F to 800 F. That is hot enough to melt lead! The diameter of Mercury is about 3,030 miles. That is the distance from Albany New York to Monterey California!

  5. Moons and Distance From Sun Because Mercury is so close to the sun the planet can’t have any moons or they would get to close and burn up. If Mercury were farther it may have moons but it is only 36 million miles from the sun.

  6. Distance From Earth and Rotation The distance Earth at the closes point is about 57 million mile. Mercury’s day is 59 earth days long.

  7. Revolving and naming Mercury Mercury has a looooong day but, because Mercury is so close but, that means its year is short! Mercury’s year is 88 earth days long .That is how they named it Mercury because it means messenger.

  8. More Interesting Facts Here are some extra cool facts! If you weigh 100 pounds on earth you would weigh 38 pounds on Mercury Mercury has no rings Lots of space probes have been to Mercury.

  9. Bibliography/Webliography • Ericson, Kristen. "solar system exploration." nasa. April 8 2014. NASA. 1 April, 2014. <nasa.gov>.
