  1. Relationships Between Income and Perspectives Mahbub Rasul Class: SIPS/Transfer to Social Science Research Teacher: Ms. Choice

  2. Problem The goal of the project is to determine the if a possible correlation exists between income levels and perspectives about an individual's future in today's society.

  3. Background Information • Income and class movement is often a topic of research by professionals in public policy in the United States. Most of the research in this topic is concentrated on the effects on income to the future position of a person. For example, studies have been made to understand the relationship between income levels and the eventual class movement or class stagnation a person takes part in the future. • Little research however is done in the relationship between income levels and the individuals perspective of their OWN future. • This important facet of social policy seems to have been unanswered in the many studies conducted. The goal of the project is to find the possible relationship between income and perspectives of the participating individuals.

  4. Background Information • It has been shown in studies that broad trends exist between income levels and future position of an individual based on class and positions exists. • For example it has been shown in studies that approximately 50% of people in poverty in the United States remain in poverty in their later lives. This situation can be attributed to many factors including education, societal organization and hierarchy. • However, if research is conducted on the participants own perspective of their situation based on income levels broad trends may be observed which can lead to policy to increase more upward mobility in society.

  5. Hypothesis • My hypothesis is that there will be a relationship between income levels and the participants perspective on future class and economic advancement. • This I believe will be a result of society's organization which tends to put people in lower income ranges under pressure due to lack of often, good education possibilities and career placement. • I also believe broad relationships may be drawn based on race as previous studies on income levels and future placement has shown that the most disproportionate group of individuals unable to partake in upward mobility are African Americans and Hispanics.

  6. Model Procedure • A survey is necessary for participants to fill out. The survey must include the basic information about the participant to be used for classification. • A set of question must be used to determine the income level. The best possible method yet to be come up with is the use of lunch tickets etc and the sending of the survey to specific targeted geographical areas where there is broad income ranges. The key is to focus on the broad generalizations and not the few unique situations. • Next a set of questions will be asked to determine how the individual shapes his/her future perspective. The goal will be to determine whether the individual feels that he/she will succeed in society and be able to breakout of the current situation they are in or will stagnate at present levels.

  7. Model Procedure • After the collection of the data, analysis will be conducted on them. Permutations of the data fields will be made to identify trends and relationships. This step is highly discretionary. • Possible permutations include graphing the data, classifying data based on race, gender, and of course economic level. • The analysis will be used to draw broad generalizations and possible solutions that may be made if it is seen that there is indeed a relationship between income and future participant perspective.

  8. Application • The data obtained through this research will be extensive enough to be used to make possible generalizations which can be used to create possible application. • One application is to use targeted social policies which will change the participant's perspectives for the better and which may in turn result in future class mobilization effects. • Another application is to compare and contrast the data collected to by previous studies on actual income level vs future mobility data. This will tell us whether the participant perspective actually CHANGES as the journey through life.

  9. Conclusion • This brief presentation gives the outlines the background of such research endeavor and possible methodologies in obtaining the required data in the perimeters of the scientific method. • The data obtained may present to us much informations about possible applications of targeted social policy as outlined in this presentation.
