  3. Y95 cohort in this study • In Year 9 in 1995 (average age 14) • National sample: 13,613 students • Annual data to 2004 (average age 23) • Full data on 4,660 (34% of sample) • Weighted to compensate for attrition

No labour market activity No post-school study Labour market Apprenticeship Australian apprenticeships Traineeship VET sector School Non-apprenticeship (lower certificates) Non -apprenticeship VET Non-apprenticeship (higher certificate) Non-apprenticeship (diploma & higher qualifications) University Pathways analysed

  5. Post-school education & training • By 2001 (average age 20), 80% had commenced some post-school education & training • 42% of cohort had commenced VET • -- 12% in apprenticeships • -- 10% in traineeships • -- 24% in non-apprenticeship VET

  6. Net benefits of VET relative to no post-school education/training • Higher proportion in FT employment (especially apprenticeships & traineeships) • Lower proportion unemployed • Higher earnings (for apprentices) • Current job closer to career preference • Higher benefits from completion than participation

  7. Benefits of VET in Schools • Little direct benefit on employment • But, moderate indirect effect via: • -- increased school completion • -- increased post-school education/training • -- higher completion rates • Note: this cohort were ‘early’ participants in VET in Schools (about 1997 & 1998)
