  2. Journal Activity • Write a vivid description of your last substitute teacher. Include a physical description as well as a description of their personality.

  3. Daily Grammar • Parts of Speech Formative Assessment. What do you remember from School House Rocks? • Complete Assessment • Grade • Where do we go from here?

  4. Daily Grammar • A Noun is a person, place or thing. • The beautiful horse ran. • Where’s the noun? • An adjective describes the noun. • Where’s the adjective?

  5. Daily Grammar • A verb is an action word. • The beautiful horse ran quickly. • Where’s the verb? • An adverb tells when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened. • Where’s the adverb?

  6. Skill 1--Summarization • What do I want you to do? • Pull out main ideas • Focus on KEY details • Use key words and phrases • Break down larger ideas • Write only enough to convey the gist • Take brief, but complete notes

Sum it up instructions--METHOD • Get a “Sum it up” sheet • Read the entire selection and, as you read, list the main idea words on the sheet. • Write a summary of the selection using as main of the main idea words as possible. Put one word in each blank. Imagine you have only $2.oo and that each word is worth ten cents. Make your cash count!

  8. Summarization • Let’s complete the back of the worksheet. Focus only on key ideas. Also, use key words from the article when creating your summary.

  12. Journal • Create a list of slang words you typically use. • Write a journal in which you explain the definition of your favorite slang word and the reason why you like to use this word when you are speaking.

  15. Grammar Pronouns • A pronoun can replace a noun or another pronoun. • You use pronouns like, he, which, non and you to make your sentences less repetitive. • John likes icecream and he eats it after dinner.

  16. New Parts of Speech Conjunctions—A part of speech that connects two words, sentences, phrases or clauses. • For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so • He is gambling with his health, for he has been smoking far too long. • Every day they gamble or they smoke. • They gamble, yet they don’t smoke.

  17. New Parts of Speech • Prepositions • A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. The word or phrase that the preposition introduces is called the object of the preposition. • The box trick!

  18. Let’s Read! • As you read, please record words! • In your opinion, which sentence in the article was the main idea? • How do you know? • Which sentence in the article was the second most important sentence? • How do you know?

  22. Exit Card--Summarization • There are some basic tips and advice that will help anyone get through high school. First, don’t be afraid to approach your teachers. If you’re struggling in class, ask your teacher for help outside of class. My sophomore year I probably visited my lit teacher over 10 times while writing my research paper. The result? I earned a 100%. It’s nearly impossible to get 100% on anything in her class, but I did it. • Which statement best summarizes the paragraph? • A. Everyone needs good advice to make it through high school. • B. Asking for help from a teacher can be the most valuable thing you do during high school. • C. Writing research papers is difficult without the aid of a teacher. • D. It’s easy to earn 100% if you constantly badger a teacher for a good grade.

  25. Journal • Parents and children often claim to be misunderstood by each other. Explain one thing you think your parents (or other people their age) don’t understand about your generation. Then explain one thing you think your parents would say your generation doesn’t understand about them.
