Early Life • Ansel Adams was born on February 20th, 1902 in San Francisco • Adams was a talented musician before turning to photography • He first visited Yosemite National Park in 1916 along with his family. This trip sparked his interest in photography, specifically, photography of nature. • Married Virginia Best in 1928

  3. Career • Most of Adams work was about the Southwestern US and specifically Yosemite National Park. • Adams got his 1st contract for his 1st portfolio in 1927, and the portfolio was a success. The portfolio was called Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras • Adams developed a friendship with fellow photographer Paul Strand in the 1930’s, who would be very influential inn Adams photographic styles. • Adams 1st independent museum exhibit was in the Smithsonian institute in 1931, and the exhibit was well liked by many critics and his works were praised by the Washington Post

Career Cont’d • Adams organized A Pageant of Photography, which was the largest and most important photography show in the West up until that point, and had millions of visitors • The Department of the Interior asked Adams to take photographs of National Parks, Indian Reservations, and other locations to be used in mural-sized prints for the decoration of the departments new building In 1941 • Adams began holding annual photography workshops in California, for students, in June 1955 and continuing having them until 1981.

Awards and Death • Adams was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1966 • President Carter awarded Adams with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980, which is the nation highest honor given to a civilian. • Adams died on April 22nd 1984 in Carmel, California from a heart attack
