  1. MobiHealth Communication Infrastructure Measurement strategy of E2E communication link MobiHealth WP3 meeting November 13, 2002 MobiHealth Team, University of Twente email: mhealth@mobihealth.org Internet: www.mobihealth.org

  2. Presentation layout • Problem statement – identifying segments of the communication link in E2E connection • Possible scenarios of communication infrastructures • Proposed measurement strategy • Measurements’ assumptions & requirements • Schedule of activities

  3. Problem statement Segments of communication link in E2E connection: • Due to the fact that end-host cannot communicate directly with the Sensor we consider: • E2E communication link: • MBU ↔ end-host

  4. Problem scenarios for different wireless technologies 1. Applying 2.5G technology - GPRS

  5. Problem variants for different wireless technologies (cont.) 2. Applying WLAN plus 2.5G technologies – VTT scenario 3. Applying 3G technology - UMTS

  6. Proposed measurement strategy • Firstly: delay, data loss, throughput characteristics of the E2E link Due to the fact, that for now we don’t have an insight into the MobileOperator Network our measurement approach is as follows:

  7. Proposed measurement strategy (cont.) • Proposed approach: • Measurements between points A-A’; Derivation of delay, throughput, data loss characteristics (distribution functions) • Measurements between points B-B’, where part of the link A-A’ is a “black-box”; derivation of B-B’ characteristics of the link as above • Simulation of the whole E2E communication link (programming); playing with the parameters derived from measurements: MBU and Application host (e.g. changing the scheduling discipline) • and observing the influence for the E2E characteristics • Conclusion is the theoretical model for the E2E communication link • Secondly: service coverage, mobility support • These characteristics are specific for the Operator’s Network • and could be derived by means of measurements done with help of the service providers – Mobile Operators…

  8. Measurements’ assumptions & requirements • Step-by-step derivation of system’s characteristics, where each step is going deeper into the details of particular segment • High number of measurements (samples) to guarantee the statistical correctness • Access to the operator infrastructure to place measurement probes • Due to the fact, that at UT we have good communication infrastructure – 2Gb/s pipe to the Internet – we need some kind of average performance model of the Internet and Enterprise network

  9. Schedule of activities • Start date : December 1, 2002 • Literature study • Problem definition phase (2 mth) • Measurements phase (2 mth) • Simulation phase (3 mth) • Conclusion : theoretical model (2 mth) November 1, 2003
