  2. What is a Muckraker? • A journalist who unveils the truth and shows the unsanitary conditions of different situations, sometimes over exaggerating. • Theodore Roosevelt gave the Muckrakers their name. • A Muckrake is a rake or pitchfork used to clean manure and hay out of stables.

  3. Upton Sinclair • Important to the public because he made awareness of the misconduct in politics and business.

  4. How did Muckrakers bring about change? • Some of the things they exposed were put into the public eye. Showing what the government, factories, businesses, etc… were hiding and doing wrong.

  5. Muckraker Quote: •      “Every good newspaper is muckraking to some degree. It's part of our job. Where there's muck, we ought to rake it.” • James P. Cannon

  6. Why do you think that Muckrakers were so effective in promoting change? • The people who read the newspaper articles believed what they read, and since the Muckrakers came along it promoted chaos and disagreements about what the “media” was portraying.

  7. Ida B. Wells-Barnett • This is one of the journalism articles that a muckraker would write. • In this she brought to the publics attention that three African American business men have been lynched by the white owner of a grocery store.
