  4. British Imperial System • Navigation Acts 1650 • 1650 shipping crews - must be English • ships - of English control • destination - England first • 1673 - First Royal Official • Sent to New England Colonies • Enforcement of Laws by a representative from England • Takes power from the colonies

British Imperial System • Navigation Acts 1650 • 1696 - Vice Admiralty Courts • courts in England appointed judges, & search & seize contra band w/o a warrant • contraband - products that didn't come from England • Fined, enforced by soldiers, tried w/o juries • colonists resent an outsider coming in from outside with power to persecute. smuggling was accepted by Americans • e.g. Rum from Jamaica

British Imperial System • Further Attempt to Control Colonies • Dominion of New England 1686 • 4 colonies made into a single unit or dominion • take away the boundaries to take away the resistance - townships disbanded • Glorious Revolution 1686 • King James leaves and Parliament is in control • William of Orange - William & Mary invited to come to England by the Parliament • Policies of dominion quickly changed • New monarch denounced dominion back to 4 colony states

British Imperial System • Trade Acts • 1699 Wool Acts - prohibit colonies from raising sheep in support of the enclosure act & textile manufacturing in England • 1732 Hat Act - don't produce hats in colonies send England the raw materials • 1750 Iron Act - controlled iron manufacturing PRIVATE LOBBYING BY BRITISH PRODUCERS/MERCHANTS SEEKING TO HAVE THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT THEM THROUGH LAWS
