Key Elements of a Landscape Approach • A process or strategy to reconcile competing land use interests; • Multi-stakeholder and cross-sectoral; • Recognizes the multi-functionality of landscapes; • Balances local needs and global development objectives; • Adaptive management supported by monitoring and feedback • Understands trade-offs between different land management choices to identify policy options, investment and development opportunities.

  3. Implementing a Landscape Approach

  4. LUD Objectives • Landscape vision developed amongst landscape stakeholders (ie ROAM); • Prioritized actions created for achieving the vision (ie LUD); • Feed into ongoing processes on the ground (Mangai GWG); • Support improved landscape decision making.

  5. LUD Specific Activities • LUD Background Research; • LUD Roundtables; • LUD Multi-Stakeholder Platform; • Continued Dialogue; • Monitoring, Evaluation and Adaptation.

LUD Pilots The Brazilian LUD • Launched: April 2016 in Santa Catarina, Brazil; • Objectives: Initiate land use planning in the Upper Itajai Valley; Form partnerships between NGOs and companies focused on PES and restoration. The Tanzanian LUD • Launched: November 2016 in Iringa, Tanzania; • Objectives: Initiate dialogue among land use committees and villages; Form partnerships between NGOs and companies focused on PES and restoration.

LUD and the PLUS Project • PLUS countries • WassaAmenfi and Mole Landscapes, Ghana • Kilombero Landscape, Tanzania • Mangai Landscape, DRC • AgoroAgu Landscape, Uganda • LUD is a subnational dialogue process in each country; • Co-designed with in-country implementing partners; • Convened by in landscape governance working group, driven by GWG identified priorities and direction.
