  2. Vulcan Vulcan was the Roman god of the Forge. A forge is a shop with a furnace where metal is heated and hammered out into useful items.

  3. Vulcan & Birmingham Birmingham was founded in 1871. The area where the city grew is very special because it contains coal, iron ore, and limestone, the raw materials for making iron and steel. Birmingham's founders knew this would be a good place to build an industrial city. By 1900, Birmingham was called the "Magic City" because it grew so quickly.

  4. Birmingham Continues to Grows Giuseppe Moretti, an Italian immigrant, built the Vulcan in 6 weeks. It was displayed at the Worlds fair to promote area's growing industrial abilities.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a group of black and white Birmingham citizens had a dream: to take the lessons learned and victories gained during Alabama’s Civil Rights Movement and create an educational and research center that would influence the struggle for human rights all over the world.

  11. Birmingham History Sloss Furnaces produced iron since 1880, which gave rise to the city of Birmingham. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnaces with its web of pipes and tall smokestacks offers us a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and our nation.

  12. Col. James Whithers Sloss Colonel Sloss played an important role in the founding of the city by convincing the L&N Railroad to capitalize completion of the South and North rail line through Jones Valley, the site of the new town (Birmingham).

  13. National Historic Landmark Sloss received National Historic Landmark designation in 1981 and opened its gates in September 1983, as a museum of the City of Birmingham. Its collection consists of two 400-ton blast furnaces and some forty other buildings.
