  2. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Mission: To provide national leadership, coordination and resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization

  3. JJDP Act Provides Specific Authorization to Conduct: • Basic Research – causes of delinquency, victimization, longitudinal studies, Study Groups • Evaluation – What works (and what doesn’t) in preventing/reducing delinquency • Statistics – trends, relevant data (arrests, court data, custody data) 42 U.S.C. 5661 (Sec. 251.) of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act of 1974, as amended

Data Driven and Evidence Based Programming is in our law • Title II of the JJDP Act states, the “designated state • agency will, to the extent practicable, give priority in • funding to programs and activities that are based on • rigorous, systematic, and objective research that is • scientifically based.” -42 USC 5633 (a)(21)(A) • Title V of the JJDP Act states that the administrator • shall give priority to “developing data-driven • prevention plans, employing evidence-based prevention • strategies, and conducting program evaluations to • determine impact and effectiveness.” • -42 USC 5783 (c)(5)

  5. More on why . . . Juvenile justice is a system apart from the criminal justice system (kids are not “little adults”). Juvenile justice system covers the full spectrum from abuse/neglect, delinquency, and family matters. There are key opportunities for intervention and partnership with other organizations and agencies. We benefit from utilizing the knowledge garnered from the body of juvenile justice research.

Direct Support for Research • OJJDP has 56 active grants, cooperative agreements, contracts and IAAs supporting research, evaluation and statistics activities • OJJDP is making 21 brand new research awards in 2010 • OJJDP’s Research Webpage (to include information about all active research projects) will launch in November 2010.

  8. Coordination with federal partners (OJP and others) • Serve as advisors and subject matter experts to help in study planning, design, dissemination • Co-fund other agency data collection/ research activities • Share resources for outreach, meetings, study planning
