  1. STUDIES IN DANIEL 11 “Identifying the King of the South”

  2. Basic Chronology of Daniel 11 • Dan. 11:2 Persia (4 Persian Kings) • Dan. 11:2-3 Greece (Alexander) • Dan. 11:4 4 Hellenistic Kingdoms • Dan. 11:5-15 Syria (north) vs. Egypt (south) • Dan. 11:16-30 Pagan Rome • Dan. 11:30-39 Papal Rome (538-1798) • Dan. 11:40-45 Papal Rome (1798-End) • Dan. 12:1 Close of Probation • Time of Trouble • God’s People Delivered

  3. Daniel 11:40 (KJV) “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.”

  4. Three Main Concepts in Daniel 11:40 • “Time of the End” – 1798 to the end. • “King of the North” – Papal Rome. • “King of the South” – ????? • To understand the identity of this power, we must examine the identity of the “king of the south” from earlier passages in Dan. 11. There are three periods of warfare between the kings of the north and south in Dan. 11.

  5. The “King of the South” in Daniel 11 • Verses 5-15 – Ptolemaic Egypt is the “king of the south” in these verses, having been located south of Israel. • Verses 25-28 – Ptolemaic Egypt is still the “king of the south” in these verses, with Mark Antony leading Egypt against Octavian of Rome through his influence with Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt.

  6. The “King of the South” in Daniel 11:40 • Verse 40 – this text states that the “king of the south” would “push” against the “king of the north” (Papal Rome) “AT” the “time of the end,” i.e. in the year 1798. • Several Bible translations use the specific term “AT” with reference to the “time of the end” (KJV, NKJV, NASB, NRSV, NIV, ESV), which conveys that the activity took place right in the actual year of 1798.

  7. The “King of the South” in Dan. 11:40 • The word “push” is the Hebrew word nagach (Strong’s 5055), which means to “butt with horns,” to “war against,” or to “gore” (2 Chr. 18:10; Dan. 8:4). • This term implies that the “king of the south” ends the power of Papal Rome in the year 1798, being synonymous with the deadly wound (see Rev. 13:3, 10).

  8. The “King of the South” in Dan. 11:40 • Since the “king of the south” is Egypt in Dan. 11:5-15 and 11:25-28, it must still be associated with “Egypt” in verse 40, as there is no mention of another power for the “south” between Dan. 11:28 and 11:40. • Yet, in Dan. 11:40, the term “Egypt” must be viewed in a symbolic, spiritual sense (not in a literal sense), similar to how the terms “Babylon” and “Israel” are understood in a symbolic sense in post-Calvary prophecy.

  9. The “King of the South” in Dan. 11:40 • In Exodus 5:1-2, Pharaoh of Egypt actually denied the existence of the true God. • Since “Egypt” is associated with a denial of the existence of the true God, this term must be associated with ATHEISM. • GC 269 actually confirms that the term “Egypt” in Bible prophecy is to be associated with the concept of atheism.

  10. Great Controversy, page 269 “Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt most boldly denied the existence of the living God and resisted His commands. No monarch ever ventured upon more open and highhanded rebellion against the authority of heaven than did the king of Egypt. When the message was brought him by Moses, in the name of the Lord,

  11. Great Controversy, page 269 Pharaoh proudly answered: ‘Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken unto his voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.’ Exodus 5:2, A.R.V. This is atheism, and the nation represented by Egypt would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God and would manifest a like spirit of unbelief and defiance.”

  12. Atheism and the “King of the South” • Per GC 269, the beast from the bottomless pit, spiritually called Egypt (Rev. 11:7-8), is an atheistic power. • Daniel and Revelation go together; it is consistent for “Egypt” to symbolize atheism in both prophetic books. • The “king of the south” in the first part of Dan. 11:40 and the beast of Rev. 11:7-8 are descriptive of the same power.

  13. Atheism and the “King of the South” • Therefore, in the year 1798, atheism must have dealt the papacy its “deadly would” by “pushing” against this power. • The atheistic power that “pushed” against the papacy was that of revolutionary France, which defied God and exalted “reason.” • In Feb. 1798 the French army ended the civil power of the papacy, ending its 1260-year dark-age rule, which went from 538 to 1798.

  14. The “King of the North” Responds • Dan. 11:40 also states that the “king of the north” responds to the “push” of atheism by conquering this force. • The conquest of modern atheism might have been at least partially fulfilled through the Cold War victory and the fall of atheistic communism in Eastern Europe in 1991.

  15. The “King of the North” Responds • Yet, atheism as an ideology is still strong, especially in western academia. There are atheistic nations still in existence also. • So, Dan. 11:40b could also describe a general resurgence of the papacy back to power, rather than a specific attack against atheism. • The final destruction of atheism will most likely take place when Satan counterfeits the 2nd Advent of Christ. It will be a universal deception (GC 561-562; 624-625).

  16. QUESTION Could the “king of the south” be a symbol of Islam?

  17. Is the “King of the South” Islam? • There are several reasons why the “king of the south” of Dan. 11:40 is not Islam. • The “north” is symbolic of the highest spiritual position where God dwells; the “south” is the opposite, the lowest possible position where God is denied altogether. Atheism denies the existence of God. • No Islamic power “pushed” against the papacy in 1798 (“AT the time of the end”).

  18. Is the “King of the South” Islam? • The Bible (Exo 5:1-2) and the Spirit of Prophecy (GC 269) equate “Egypt” with atheism, not Islam. Nowhere in the Bible is Islam equated with the spiritual or symbolic meaning of “Egypt.” • Yet, the symbol of “Egypt” as being atheism in Dan. 11:40 is completely consistent with the Bible texts of Exo. 5:1-2 and Rev. 11:7-8.

  19. Has modern Atheism been eradicated? • The fall of atheistic communism in Europe did not eradicate atheism as an ideology. • The papacy will have to bring adherents of atheism into line with its end-time global agenda to control the world. • A major philosophical element of atheism is the theory of evolution; Papal Rome’s espousal of theistic evolution could be an ecumenical bridge to reach atheists.

  20. Pope Pius XII, Humani Generis, August 12, 1950 “The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men

  21. Pope Pius XII, Humani Generis, August 12, 1950 experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, insofar as it inquiries into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter.”

  22. Pope John Paul II, Address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, October 22, 1996 “In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII had already stated that there was no opposition between evolution and the doctrine of the faith about man and his vocation. . . . Taking into account the state of scientific research at the time as well as of the

  23. Pope John Paul II, Address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, October 22, 1996 the requirements of theology, the encyclical Humani Generis considered the doctrine of ‘evolutionism’ a serious hypothesis, worthy of investigation and in-depth study equal to that of the opposing hypothesis.”

  24. Pope John Paul II, Address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, October 22, 1996 “Today, almost half a century after the publication of the encyclical, new knowledge has led to the recognition of the theory of evolution as more than a hypothesis.”

  25. Review – “King of the South” in Dan. 11 • The “king of the south” in Dan. 11:5-15 is Egypt under the Ptolemaic dynasty. • The “king of the south” in Dan. 11:25-28 is Ptolemaic Egypt as controlled by Mark Antony and the queen Cleopatra VII. • The “king of the south” is still “Egypt” in Dan. 11:40; yet, because the context of this text is after Calvary, it must refer to the spiritual/symbolic meaning of “Egypt.”

  26. Review – “King of the South” in Dan. 11 • The Bible and GC 269 both refer to “Egypt” as a symbol of atheism. • The phrase “AT” the “time of the end” refers to the year 1798. • The word “push” conveys the idea of warfare and dealing a death blow. • The only atheistic power that dealt the papacy a deathblow in 1798 was that of Revolutionary France.

  27. Review – “King of the South” in Dan. 11 • Rome will respond to this “push” sometime after 1798 by overrunning atheism; its toppling of atheistic communism in Eastern Europe could be part of this response. • Atheism in general is still prevalent; Rome might use evolution as common ground for an ecumenical bridge to reach atheists. • The final destruction of atheism will take place when Satan appears as Christ to add credibility to Rome’s Sunday agenda.

  28. CONCLUDING THOUGHTS • The papacy and atheism actually have one point in common; both ideologies exalt human wisdom above the Word of God. • Papal Rome deifies human wisdom in the form of church tradition, while atheism deifies human wisdom as being an all- sufficient guide in life; both systems give the highest place to human reason at the expense of God and His Word.

  29. CONCLUDING THOUGHTS • SDAs are not necessarily immune to the influence of exalting human reason. • We might not be followers of atheism or Catholicism, but do we exalt human wisdom in other ways? Do we exalt our own opinions or the opinions of others above the Word of God at times? • The SOP predicted that SDAs would be in danger of exalting human wisdom above the Word of God at the end of time.

  30. Selected Messages, 1:204-205 “The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization.”

  31. Selected Messages, 1:204-205, cont’d “Were this reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error.”

  32. Selected Messages, 1:204-205, cont’d “A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. . . . Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement. The leaders would teach that virtue is better than vice, but

  33. Selected Messages, 1:204-205, cont’d God being removed, they would place their dependence on human power, which, without God, is worthless. Their foundation would be built on the sand, and storm and tempest would sweep away the structure.”

  34. Selected Messages, 1:204-205, cont’d “Who has authority to begin such a movement? We have our Bibles. We have our experience, attested to by the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit. We have a truth that admits of no compromise. Shall we not repudiate everything that is not in harmony with this truth?”

  35. A SOLEMN APPEAL • God must be the true “king of the north” in our lives; Christ and His Word must have the highest position and final say. • Faith in the Bible will help us to resist any “system of intellectual philosophy” that might threaten our spiritual well-being. • Trusting in human wisdom is an all-pervading practice today; we must guard ourselves, our families, and our churches from its influence.

  36. A SOLEMN APPEAL • We must not lose faith in our pillars, which might include such teachings as the literal nature of Genesis, the prophetic gift, church standards, victory over sin in Christ, the investigative judgment, the sanctuary message, etc. • Will we do all in our power to give God and the Bible the highest place in our lives, our families, and our churches?
