  2. Chapter 9 Sec 1 Notes • Who could become a Roman citizen? • Originally only males living in the city of Rome • Citizenship eventually granted to men living in Roman Empire • Men had to register in Census to be a citizen • Must register: Family, Slaves, Land, Wealth

Roman Social Classes • Vast difference between Roman rich ruling class and common poor Romans • Society had a hierarchy with rich males on top and slaves on the bottom • Rich had running water and ate well • Poor had no running water and often starved • Many poor lived off of handouts offered by Roman government
