  2. WVU Response to Energy Issues The Advanced Energy Initiative (AEI) AEI’s vision is to break down the barriers America’s energy producers encounter as they work for responsible approaches to energy independence and to place a role for our region at the top of the nation’s energy agenda.

WVU – Uniquely Positioned for Energy Leadership WVU has… • A history of research in the fossil energy area • A significant funding stream for energy research • Over 100 faculty members have expressed an interest in becoming engaged in energy research during an energy inventory in November 2007

Producing Leaders for America’s Energy Future AEI overall goals focus on the education of future leaders for the Nation’s energy-producing region by • Strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation • Developing state-of-the-art research infrastructure • Educating students for careers in energy and the environment

AEI’s Three Major Focus Areas • Fossil Energy Focus: Fossil Energy Conversion, Utilization, Materials, Sequestration and Environmental Management • Sustainable Energy Focus: Energy Efficiency, Conservation, Materials, Renewable Energy • Energy Policy and Regulatory Affairs Focus: Analysis of Energy Policy, Carbon Management, Environmental, and Infrastructure Issues

  8. Fossil Energy Research Target Areas • Carbon capture and geologic storage • Clean power generation and distribution • Coal to clean fuel and chemicals • Extraction technology • Fuels production • Energy materials • High-efficiency engine and vehicle technology

  9. Sustainable Energy Research Target Areas • Biomass conversion • Biomass/coal conversion with sequestration • Energy efficiency studies • Energy-related water resource management • Energy materials • Solar conversion • Sustainable design and development

  10. Energy Policy Target Areas Policy studies drive economic actions in the energy area. AEI Goals are to: • Form a broad interdisciplinary policy team to identify critical issues • Develop major research programs • Develop a macroeconomic modeling program for energy systems

AEI Implementation Support and encourage faculty research in the three interdisciplinary focus areas through: incentives, resources and recruitment Identify opportunities to transition ongoing research efforts into research areas with greater probability for funding. Encourage interdisciplinary teams to identify opportunities and initiate projects in key areas.

Materials Research at WVU: Some Examples • Materials Processing: SOFC - Prof. Ed Sabolsky; Nano-sensors – Prof. Nick Wu • High Temperature Alloys: Cr-, Mo-, and Ni-based alloys, ODS alloys -Prof. Bruce Kang • Biomaterials (Wood Utilization Center): Profs. Jinxing Wang and Joe McNeel • Analytical equipment (tied in with WVU Nano): SEM/EDX, XPS, AFM, XRD, TEM

  14. Closing Comments WVU has a strong commitment to coal and energy research, and to materials research, in particular. The AEI initiative will allow WVU to: • Work closely with the state and federal governments to develop the region’s energy resources for economic development and • Engage industry and trade associations to strengthen and advance energy research programs
