  2. If the World Were a Village of 100 People • If we could reduce the world’s population of nearly 6.5 billion people to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios of goods, food, water, etc., remaining the same, the world would look something like this...

  3. The village would have: • 60 Asians • 13 Africans • 12 Europeans • 9 Latin Americans (Central and South America, Mexico) • 5 from USA and Canada • 1 from the Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific Islands)

  4. Gender Ratio • 51 would be male • 49 would be female

  5. Language • 14 would speak Mandarin (Chinese) • 8 would speak Hindu/Urdu • 8 would speak English • 7 would speak Spanish • 4 would speak Russian • 4 would speak Arabic

  6. Religion • 33 would be Christian • 20 would be Muslims • 13 would be Hindus • 6 would be Budduists • 14 would be members of other religions • 12 would be non-religious

  7. Age • 27 would be under 15 years of age • 7 would be over 64 years old

  8. Homes • 65 would live in an adequate home • 35 would be living in substandard housing

  9. Literacy • 84 would be able to read and write at some level • 16 would be unable to read or write at all

  10. Daily Sustenance • 67 would have various levels of food supplies deemed adequate • 33 would be malnourished

  11. Clean Drinking Water • 67 would have access to clean water while • 33 would be without access to a safe water supply

  12. Running Water • 61 would have running water • 39 would lack access to running water

  13. Electricity • 24 would not have electricity • Of the 76 that do have electricity, most would only be able to use it for light at night

  14. Modern Conveniences • There would be: • 42 radios, • 24 TVs • 14 telephones • 7 computers • 7 would own a car • 7 would have access to the internet

  15. Education • 10 would have a college education

  16. Wealth • 5 would control 32% of the entire world’s wealth • 33 would be receiving (and struggling to live on) just 3% of the world’s income • 53 would live on less than $2.00 a day

  17. Parting Thoughts • If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep ... you are more comfortable than 75% of the people in this world. • If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. • If you can read this, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.
