  1. Uploading: Overview of a speculative technology By Marshall Brain

  2. The pace of technology can be staggering

  3. Therefore, it can be hard to predict the future • What if I had tried in 1980? • The Web: 1993 • Cell phones: 1984 • Macintosh: 1984 • CDs: 1983

  4. But there is one thing I’m sure of...

  5. People will want out of their human bodies. Three reasons...

  6. 1980 2005 Reason 1: Video games

  7. A 3-D immersive ticket to anywhere

  8. Just one small problem...

  9. Reason 2: Porn

  10. Porn’s penetration • Google: 2.7% of all web traffic • Yahoo search: 1.7% • MSN search: 1.1% • Porn 18.8%

  11. Reason 3: Longevity

  12. And so, we will discard our bodies quite willingly. We will plug into a virtual world

  13. We will live longer... • Zero trauma • Far fewer diseases • Much less collateral risk • But neurons still die We will have more fun...

  14. Therefore, we will want to upload our brains to a permanent medium

  15. A quick look at the human brain • 1,400cc average • 20 watts • 100 billion neurons • 100 trillion synapses • 10e29 atoms

  16. Basic component: the neuron • 100 billion neurons • 100 trillion synapses

  17. Neurons encode information in at least three ways • The connections between neurons • Synaptic weighting • New synapses Neurons encode information in at least three ways

  18. Three uploading approaches* • Data download • Excite and extract • Neuron simulation • Thin sectioning • Nanotechnology • Atomic simulation • Store the position/type/spin of every atom and simulate • *All of these are highly speculative

  19. Resources to Learn More • http://MarshallBrain.com/discard.htm • http://MarshallBrain.com/manna1.htm • “Programming the universe” by Seth Lloyd
