  2. The Basics: • What? State of tension and hostility among nations without armed conflict • Who? The US and Soviet Union • When? 1945-1991

  3. Remember the US and the SU fought on the same side in WWII

  4. Why were the SU and the US mad at each other after the war? • Truman was mad the Soviet Union had signed a non aggression pact with Hitler • Soviet Union was upset the US had taken so long to assist them in WWII & that they were being left out of peace talks • Both countries created the strongest military forces on Earth

  5. Origins of the Cold War: • The SU and the US also had different economic and political systems that caused conflict.

  6. Political Systems: • Soviet Union: Communism: government makes all decisions and controls all aspects of citizens’ lives • United States: Democracy: government in which the people hold the ruling power

  7. Economic Systems: • Soviet Union: Command Economy: economic system in which government makes all basic economic decisions • United States: Market Economy: economic system in which individuals make basic decisions

  8. Differing Goals: • Stalin’s major goal was to control Eastern Europe and shield itself from another attack • The US wanted to stop the spread of communism

  9. The Iron Curtain: • Per an agreement at the Yalta Conference, Germany is divided • Eastern Zones: controlled by SU • Western Zones: controlled by US & other democratic countries • Churchill uses the phrase “iron curtain” to represent Europe’s division between most democratic western Europe and a Communist eastern Europe
