  1. Mass and Change Lab • Write down the directions for the lab • You will be given a data sheet tomorrow to record your numbers and observations.

  2. Mass and Change Lab Part 1 – Mass of ice and water Materials Balance Small vial and chip of ice Procedure • Find the mass of the vial, cap and a small piece of ice. 2. Set the vial aside and go on to part 2 while the ice melts. 3. Find the mass when the ice has melted.

  3. Part 2 – Mass of steel wool • Materials • Balance • Small wad of steel wool (~ 1/4 of a pad of #1 steel wool) • Procedure • 1. Find the mass of a small piece steel to the 0.01 gram • Carefully pull the wad apart so that it occupies a volume • roughly twice as great as before. • 3. Determine the mass of the expanded wad of steel wool.

  4. Part 3 – Mass of burning steel wool Materials Balance Bunsen burner Small tuft of steel wool Evaporating dish Crucible tongs Procedure 1. Wad the SW into a ball and find mass. 2. Light the burner, then holding the SW by the tongs heat the SW until it glows. 3. Find the mass of the SW after it has cooled. Discard the steel wool.

  5. Part 4 – Mass of a precipitate Materials Balance Two small vials 0.1M solutions of Ca(NO3)2 and Na2CO3 Procedure 1. Fill one vial 1/3 full with Calcium nitrate and fill the other 1/3 full of Sodium Carbonate. 2. Find the mass of both vials with caps together. 3. Pour the contents of one vial into the other. 4. Find the mass of both vials and caps again. 5. Dispose of in sink.

  6. Part 5 – Mass of dissolved sugar Materials Balance Vial with cap Sugar Procedure • Fill a vial about 1/2 full of water, then put the sugar cube in the cap of the vial. 2. Place the vial, water, cap and sugar on the pan of the balance. 3. Add the sugar to the water, cap the vial and shake gently to dissolve the sugar. 4. Find the mass of the vial after the sugar has dissolved.

  7. Part 6 – Mass of dissolved Alka-Seltzer Materials Balance Vial with cap Small piece (1/4 tablet) of Alka-Seltzer Procedure • Fill a vial about 1/2 full of water, then put ¼ AlkaSeltzet tablet in the cap of the vial. 2. Place the vial, water, cap and ¼ AlkaSeltzet tablet on the pan of the balance. 3. Add the AS to the vial cover LOOSELY with cap. 4. Find the mass of the vial and cap after the AS has dissolved.

  8. Make sure to record mass before and after to get the change in mass
