  2. Did you know...research says... Reading achievement is positively related to the amount of time students spend reading. http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/readingcounts/research.htm

  3. Did you know...research says... The best way to strengthen reading skills and foster the reading habit is to see that students get reading practice with books that are carefully selected and matched to their reading level and interests. http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/readingcounts/research.htm

  4. What are Lexiles?

  5. Lexile Defined: A Lexile text number represents a text’s difficulty level on the Lexile scale. This number is based on sentence length and the number of times the words frequent the English language.

  6. Lexile Defined: A Lexile reader number represents a person’s reading ability on the Lexile scale. Scholastic Reading Inventory is a computer-adaptive test. In a computer-adaptive test, students are dynamically presented with questions. When a student answers a question correctly, the next question will be harder; if the student answers a question incorrectly, the next question will be easier. The item selection process continues until a strong level of certainty of the test taker’s ability has been established, the test ends and a scale score is provided.

  7. Lexile Defined: A Lexile reader number represents a person’s reading ability on the Lexile scale. A Lexile text number represents a text’s difficulty level on the Lexile scale. WHEN USED TOGETHER, THEY CAN HELP A READER CHOOSE A BOOK OR OTHER READING MATERIAL THAT IS AT AN APPROPRIATE DIFFICULTY LEVEL.

  8. Lexile Defined: Start with an SRI test, get the students' Lexile numbers and insist that they read in their reading range.

  9. Lexile Range A person's Lexile range, or reading comprehension "sweet spot," is from 100L below to 50L above his or her reported Lexile measure.

  10. The Lexile Scale Ranges… -from below 0L for beginning readers and beginning-reading text -to above 1700L for advanced readers and text.

  11. When a student reads a text that matches his/her Lexile reader measure, this is called a "Targeted" Reading Experience. This is the best way to grow as a reader—with text that's not too hard but not too easy. best way “Think” of Goldilocks; Not to Hard and Not to Easy…but Just Right!

  12. Cabarrus County Schools use Destiny for library circulation. Students can search the library collection by their Lexile range:

  13. Resource lists Students can log in to Destiny and create lists of books in their Lexile range. When they come to the library they log in and look for book availability from their list. The list can be printed and brought to the library, but they won’t know if the book is in or out until they go to the shelves.

  14. Royal Oaks: Our staff decided that it would be best to put Lexile stickers on the outside of the books to make it easier for the students to locate books on their Lexile number.  If the book does not have a Lexile dot on the outside, then the book does not have a Lexile number.  700 350 940 580

  15. Yellow stars are BR Lexile.

  16. Boger Elementary: Books are marked with a white label on the spine.

  17. Catalog Order Marc records with Lexile code. Add Lexile code to any books you catalog. www.lexile.com

  18. How much should you expect students to grow each year? Scholastic says 100 points per year. We’ve seen 700+ points growth in one year! There are a lot of factors that determine how students will perform on the SRI test: • Sleepy? • Hungry? • Mad? • Distracted? • Hot/Cold?

  19. What about the students who are in the 800s, 900s, or 1000s? These students have successfully learned to read! Let them read more freely. Loosen the reigns or you’ll make them HATE to read. Stock your shelves with interesting, level appropriate books in all Lexile ranges. Encourage them to read Nonfiction.

  20. Attitudes about reading have changed! Used to say… *This book is too hard. *I don’t want to finish this book. *I didn’t understand this book. *I don’t like to read. *This book was awesome! Now they say… *Do you have another book like this one! *I need another book! *I’m almost finished with my book!

  21. To review the roles of the teacher, student and librarian…

  22. Student’s Role: • Take the SRI test seriously to determine the Lexilenumber. • Select books from your Lexile Range so that you will become a better reader. • Use Destiny to create lists. • Remember the school’s policy for checkout: One book in range, one free choice. • Ask for help if you don’t know what to check out. • Keep reading no matter what!!!

  23. Librarian’s Role: • Explains the program to the students and teachers. • Marks books in library. • Teaches how to use Destiny to search in range and • make resource lists.

  24. Librarian’s Role: • Helps students locate books in their range. • Monitors growth, reports to principal and or teachers. • Puts information on the school website about Lexiles, can have FAQ section. • Communicates to parents at Open House. • Publishes information in the school newsletter.

  25. Book talks include Lexile information: Title: Dead cool / by Peter Clover Sammy wants a pet. He is hoping for a dog, instead he ends up with a talking parrot named Polly. Soon after he brings the pet home, bizarre things start to happen. Sammy thought she was going to be a boring pet, but she attracts another parrot and a ghostly pirate crew and things start to get very exciting. Lexile: 540 Fic Clo

  26. When we give away books, they are marked with Lexile numbers.

  27. Teacher’s Role: • Make sure they are taking the SRI test seriously and do not give it more than once a quarter. • Require the Lexile number be used for at least one library book--they are allowed to get two. Write the number down for them to take to the library. • Conference with students about what they are reading. Make sure they are comprehending the books they are reading. Make sure it is reflected in the Lexile range. You can adjust the range if the comprehension is not on mark.

  28. Communicate with the parents about reading expectations. • Make a plan for those students who are not progressing. • Make time for reading in class. • Make sure the students know you value reading. • Give students time to make and use the resource list in Destiny. • Lexile Classroom Library. • Recognize achievement in your classroom!!

  29. And finally… • Monitor SRI testing using reports provided in the program.

  30. Did you know...research says... Assessment and evaluation are necessary to monitor student progress and adjust instruction. http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/readingcounts/research.htm

  31. Reports These are reports that give you a look at your students’ Lexiles and performance standards.

  32. Percentile rank- is how the student is performing in your class. want this to be close to 9!! want this to be close to 100!!

  33. Stanine numbers 9-8-7 above average 6-5-4 average 3-2-1 below average

  34. Intervention grouping report This report groups your students so that you can see who may need Additional support.

  35. Targeted Reading Report This report establishes reading ranges for text difficulty: easy, average and challenging.

  36. Growth Report To identify the growth each student is making. On average, a student is expected to grow 75-100 points per year.

  37. Student Action Report This report shows the student’s test history, a placement chart targeting appropriate ranges for different reading purposes, and teaching recommendations to help the student meet grade level expectations.

  38. Reading Progress Report Great summary of student performance: Number of quizzes taken/ passed Success rate Average score Books read Points earned Annual goal % of goal met

  39. Quiz Difficulty Alert Indicates students who are performing poorly or who have not quizzed in 14 days.

  41. Quiz Alert Highlights a variety of problems students may be having with quizzes.

  42. There are more reports that can help you monitor your students’ progress.

  43. Support forResponse to Intervention

  44. What does it cost? Pricing options available for SRI and RC together or individually. AR schools get a discount price for SRC. Available as a Web based subscription-year to year access. Determined by Number of students and way implemented. Tisha Moon 1-800-387-1437 ext. 264 for price quote.

  45. If time permits: How do we use Lexiles with our reading program?

  46. Did you know...research says... To build comprehension skills, students should read widely, respond to questions, and talk about what they’ve read. http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/readingcounts/research.htm

  47. Did you know...research says... Helping struggling readers requires a supportive literacy environment as part of a carefully planned intervention program. http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/readingcounts/research.htm
