The Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of BC • APEGBC is the self-regulating body, authorized under the province’s Engineer’s and Geoscientist’s Act, responsible for licensing all individuals who practice professional engineering and professional geoscience in British Columbia.

  3. A History of Service • APEGBC’s self-regulating authority has existed since 1920 when the province first passed the Engineering Profession’s Act • Geoscience was later incorporated in 1990 • #1 Purpose – uphold and protect the public interest in terms of health, safety & environment

  4. Self-Governance & APEGBC • APEGBC “IS” its Members • Self-Regulating • Governed by a Council • 13 elected members • Faculty appointee if none elected • 4 lay members appointed by Lieutenant Governor

  5. APEGBC’s Regulatory Functions • Administer Engineers and Geoscientists Act • Register qualified individuals • Investigation/Discipline • Enforce standards of entrance and practice • Enforcement against non-members holding themselves out as P.Engs./P.Geos.

  7. APEGBC Membership • Professional Member • Member-in-Training • Member Advantage Program for Students (APEG-MAPS)

  8. Professional Member • P.Eng./P.Geo. registration is granted to individuals who meet the academic, 4-year work experience and professional practice exam requirements

  9. Member-in-Training • Engineer-in-training (EIT) status is granted to individuals meeting the academic requirements who are working toward their 4-year work experience requirement

  10. Co-op Work Experience • Third Year and Beyond • Verified by P Eng/ P Geo • Meet Experience Criteria • Maximum of 12 months Co-op experience can be credited

  11. Online Experience Reporting & Review System • This system allows students and members-in-training to report their work experience online so that experience credits can be accumulated during the pre- and post-graduation periods as part of the 48 month requirement for full qualification as a P.Eng. or P.Geo.

  12. Member Advantage Program for Students • The Member Advantage Program for Students (MAPS) encourages and supports students as they begin shaping their professional future

Program Goals The APEG-MAPS program focuses on: • Increasing the interaction between students, industry professionals and APEGBC • Providing students with the means to gain education, contacts and employment, through access to APEGBC services • Elevating the level of knowledge that students need regarding their future profession • Acting as a guide to students in their transition from graduation to EIT or GIT
