The department has recently commissioned a study on gender audit for the transport sector The results of the audit would inform the design of projects, programmes and interventions to address gender imbalances. Currently 8 bidders have tendered and the adjudication process is in the final stage Background

  3. Provide a status quo analysis in terms of women qualifications, skills,funding opportunities, income levels, career aspirations and barriers, previous business opportunities etc To facilitate the entry of women in the transport sector and improve consumption of such services To develop a framework for Transport services to meet the Government objectives of service delivery within the context of Gender Equality and BEE Charter To provide a tool to strategically locate gender issues at the core of programme development taking due cognizance of existing constraints and opportunities Objectives

  4. To develop comprehensive strategies and implementation plans to address the gender imbalances in the development and supply of transport products and services including safety considerations. To provide women empowerment and mainstreaming strategy for each transport sub sector To assist in linking transport sector opportunities to other sectors development and investment initiatives including tourist activities for 2010 world cup Continued

  5. Identify workable funding solutions for women owned businesses Provide guidelines for a change in preferential procurement procedures Investigate ways and means to improve communication and information flows between the DOT and women Develop a monitoring and evaluation plan for sustainability of women’s programmes. Continued

  6. Assist with recommendations essential for establishing, formulating and implementing interventions and monitoring policies and regulations and programmes related to meeting women’s empowerment, career aspirations, skills needs etc Continued

What are the current initiatives within the transport sector Who are the key participants in transport related businesses Where do they get funding Who are their partners and stakeholders What are the challenges in the businesses How do they approach markets and trades What are their main market sectors What type of business do they provide What is their competitive edge etc Key Questions

  8. The project should be completed in 8 months from the acceptance period . And Preliminary report to be availed within the first three months of the contract Duration of the project

  9. We are committed to address the constraints that women in the sector are facing and to restore their confidence to operate in a predominantly male environment, redress gender imbalances and reintegrate them profitably in the economic mainstream of our country. Conclusion
