  1. Knights- warriors who fought on horseback Fiefs- pieces of land given to knights for their military service. Lords- a noble who gave a fief to a knight Vassal- a knight who promised to support a lord in exchange for land. . . . .

  2. Role of the Vassal When a lord went to war he called on the vassal to fight with him. Had to pay the lord money on special occasions. If a knight gained enough land he could become a lord. He could also accept multiple fiefs, becoming a vassal to two lords. … . . .

  3. How to become a Knight At eight years old, the boy was sent to a castle where he was trained as a page. Spent most of his time strengthening his body, wrestling and riding horses. Learned how to fight with a spear and a sword. He practiced against a wooden dummie called a quintain. He would be taught to read and write The lady of the castle taught the page to sing and dance and how to behave in the king’s court.

  4. A Knight’s Armor At first the armor was made of small metal rings called chain mail. Chain mail could have more than 200,000 rings. As time passed, knights covered their bodies with plates of metal A bucket like helmet protected the knight’s head and had a hinged metal visor to cover his face. Suits of armor were hot, uncomfortable, and heavy to wear. A suit of armor weighed between forty and sixty pounds.

  5. A Knights Weapons His sword- which was about thirty-two pounds. worn on his left side in a case fastened around his waist. A knife was worn on the knight’s right side. A lance was a long spear used in jousts. Maces Metal axes

  6. A Knight’s Coat of Arms A shield Shields were made of either wood or metal. Knights decorated their shields with their family emblem or crest and the family motto. Coat of Arms- the official symbols of a familya family badge or crest
