  3. Departure Standards • Terminal Instrument Procedures (TERPS) • AC climbing 200’/nm • 35’ agl at departure end • Obstacle clear zone 152’/nm • 40:1 slope

  4. Designer Options • Increase the climb gradient • Increase the standard takeoff minima to allow the pilot to visually remain clear of the obstacle • Design and publish a specific departure procedure • Use of combination of the above

  5. Instrument Departure Procedures • FAA has combined the former Standard Instrument Departure (SID’s) and textual IFR departure procedures into a single entity called an instrument departure procedure

  6. Departure Procedures • Provide obstacle clearance protection to aircraft in IMC • Increases efficiency and reduce communication and departure delays

  7. Pilot Responsibilities • Consider terrain and obstacles • Determine if a DP is available • Determine if obstacle avoidance can be maintained or if the DP should be flown • Consider the effects of engine loss • May file “No DP” in remarks section of the filed flight plan

  8. ATC may issue a clearance that is the same as the DP • Two types • Pilot Nav • Radar Vector • Dp transition routes are shown with solid lines • Use proper code Not to scale
