  5. Follows the pattern • Israelites 40 years in desert • Elijah 40 days/40 nights in the desert • Holy Spirit “drove” Jesus into the desert • Mark 1:12 • Similar to Israelites being “driven” into the desert

  6. Pattern of Temptation • I John 2:16 – “For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world.” NIV • “because all the things of the world – the desires of the old nature, the desires of the eyes, and the pretensions of life – are not from the Father but from the world.” Jewish Bible

  7. 1st Adam • Genesis 3:6 • “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food – desires of the old nature • And pleasing to the eye – desires of the eyes • And also desirable for gaining wisdom – pretensions of life • She took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” • They failed

  8. 2nd Adam • Devil follows temptation pattern • “tell this stone to become bread.” – desires of old nature • “led him up to a high place and showed him” – desires of the eyes • “throw yourself down from here” – pretentions of life • Jesus passed • He quotes from lessons Israelites had to learn in their desert experience

  9. Highest point of temple?

  10. Tamidim – Disciples • Probably young teenagers • Peter was “primary” disciple – oldest (over 18) • All knew or learning another trade • Some were disciples already • 2 from John the Baptist – John 1:35 • Nathanael – John 1:48 – Under the fig tree • Huge privilege to be a disciple

  11. Sea of Galilee • 8-10 thousand people in region • All 12 disciples came from here • Not fisherman • Only 11 harbors on entire lake • Maybe 30 fisherman total in 1st Century • Jesus had 5 fisherman as disciples • Jeremiah 16:16

  12. Bethsaida • 11 Acres in size • Fishing village • Almost a mile from Sea of Galilee now • In 1st century, harbor was at foot of town • Thousands of fishing items found • About 600 people • 6-8 extended families

  13. 5 disciples came from here • Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip

  14. Peter’s mother-in-law’s?
