What is a classical school? • Classical learning occurs in 3 phases • Grammar • Logic • Rhetoric • ***Note: not just by school structure/grade level, but with all content • Goals of classical education • Lead a virtuous life • 4 Character Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Temperance • 3 Academic Virtues: Wisdom, Good Sense, Science • Seek TRUTH, BEAUTY, and GOODNESS

S.O.L. S.O.R. • Logic • 2nd Floor – Blue • Emphasis on Dialectic • Teacher-directed classwork • Consequences • Specific instructions on conduct • Demerits - detentions • Merits – merit party/prizes • Rhetoric • 3rd Floor – Red • Emphasis on Rhetoric (generative) & Seminars • Teacher guided (student driven) classwork • Honors/AP Classes/College in the Schools • Technology during lunch • Mezzanine – option during lunch • (open campus 11th-12th) • “Roaming” projects • Senior Thesis • Wider Range of Extracurriculars/ Clubs/Formal Dances • Theme Weeks – Legacy Events • Homecoming, Ascot, Comfy Prom, Snow Daze • Consequences • Appropriate conduct is anticipated at all times • Authentic Consequence and/or Detention • Teacher nominated recognitions

Conduct Expectations • Virtuous Actions • Temperance, prudence, justice, fortitude • Act with others’ best interest – as well as your own • Respectful address of teachers/students • Mindful conduct in hallways and classes • No horseplay, , demeaning others • Conduct Tracking • SOL – Demerits for inappropriate actions (3 = detention during lunch) • Merits – recognition for positive academic/conduct (merit parties each semester) • SOR – Detention/authentic consequence • Special recognition for virtuous conduct and academics – nominated by teachers • Book Awards - Symposiums – Senior Thesis

  7. Nova’s Dress Code (6-8) • Polo / Turtleneck (burgundy or white) • Sweatshirt (maroon) • Pants /Shorts (navy) • Skirt (uniform plaid) • Belt (black or navy) • Black shoes (ALL black) • Hair (natural colors) • Optional: • Sweater – Cardigan/pullover (burgundy) • Fleece zip jacket (black)

Nova’s Dress Code (9-12) • Polo (burgundy or white) • Oxford Shirt (white) • Pants /Shorts (black) • Skirt (black) • Belt (black) • Black dress shoes (ALL black) • Hair (natural colors) • Optional: • Cardigan sweater (gray with logo) • Fleece zip jacket (black with logo) • Sweater vest (gray with logo) • Blazer (black with logo) • Tie/Scarf (black, gray, burgundy – white stripes ok) • Theme days / Spirit Wear days (as specified)

Technology Policy • 1st infraction – returned at end of day • 2nd infraction – parent must be present to pick up (detention issued) • 3rd infraction – conference with parents, conditions for use/storage while on campus • Noted in handbook – discussed during first week of class • No electronics may be used in academic wing • SOL – No use from 8:20-3:45 • SOR – Permitted during lunch ONLY (not in academic wing)

Homework • Crucial part of learning complex ideas • Essential practice of skills • ***Note: Times noted are estimates • Time spent each night may vary • School of Logic (6-8) • ~15-20 minutes per class per day • ~1 to 1 ½ hours per night (may vary) • School of Rhetoric (9-12) • ~20-25 minutes per class per day • ~2 to 2 ½ hours per night (may vary) • Ex: reading from textbook, written assignment, review/study, etc. • Honors/AP Courses (may expect up to 1 additional hour per night) • Keep this in mind when participating in extracurriculars/other activites.
