  2. What Is It? • Phosphorescence is the process of creating light by absorbing ultraviolet light that will create visible light over a extended period of time depending on the material. Because light is emitted over a period of time, phosphorescent materials are often described as “glow-in-the-dark”.

  3. How does it work? • Glow in the dark materials are coated with phosphors, special materials that give off light through a process called phosphorescence. • Phosphors absorb light energy, primarily ultraviolet light. These materials keep some of the energy and release visible light of lower energy. • Because the material holds on to the energy for varying periods of time they are called glow-in-the-dark.

  4. How it is used…. • Phosphorescent materials are used to brighten up dark places using different colours and objects.

  5. Where it is used… • Dark parties like clubs and raves use phosphorescent materials like glow sticks to add to the experience as well as provide some light.

  6. When it is used… • Phosphorescent materials and lights are used when a light source is not needed, like at nightclubs, but portable light sources are wanted. • Phosphorescent lights are used when put into toys for kids.

  7. When we first thought of phosphorescence lights, glow sticks, glow in the dark paint, and glow in the dark necklaces are the first things we thought of.

  8. Phosphorescence is also natural • The ocean is an example of natural phosphorescence. It is triggered by dinoflagellates that are disturbed.
