  1. Welcome  CCSD Numeracy Leaders Training, Grades 3 - 8 • May 27, 2014 [2013-14 School Year]

  2. “Math Moves” The purpose is to incorporate movement into reviewing math facts. It has been proven that our brains work better when we are moving or when we take a “brain break” during a lesson. Ideas/Activities beach ball toss, circle of facts, palm pairs

  4. Jim and the Beanstalk Activities Oh no! The oculist spilt his coffee all over the calculations he did for the Giant’s new glasses. Below is the information he does know, but he’s missing some the numbers. See if you can use proportions to help him figure out the missing measurements. *Be sure to set up your proportion & show your work! 1. The average human’s ear length is 2 inches compared to the length of the sides of a pair of glasses which is 5 inches. We know the Giant’s ears were 22 inches in length. How long should the oculist make the sides of his glasses? _____________________________________ = _________________

  8. Extensions…for next time…. • 3rd grade Common Core standards: • 3.md3 (Represent and Interpret data) Draw a scaled picture….. • 3.MD.4 (Represent and Interpret data) Generate measurement data by measuring….. • 3.MD.5 (Geometric measurement) Recognize area….. • 3.MD.6 (geometric measurement) measure area by counting…. • 3.md.7 (geometric measurement) relate area to the operations…..

  9. Common Core –M Centers k-5 Hands on activities, math literature, manipulatives practice and more…. k-5mathteachingresources.com All Activities have directions and game boards or premade printables to use in your instruction and practice. These are set up by domain and standard. There are multiple activities for most standards and are very user friendly. These activities don’t replace direct conceptual instruction, but are rather the we-do, you-do portion of your lesson. Additionally this site offers materials for purchase to reinforce math vocabulary, class projects and math journals for all grade levels.

  10. NCTM Conference Useful Links • http://ipadsineduc.blogspot.ca/ • Recommended math apps that are free or lost cost. • http://www.upsd.wednet.edu/Page/189 • The Math: Getting It Project addresses a troubling problem in mathematics education:  Students frequently do not ‘get it’ when they progress beyond 4th grade into fraction concepts, and later when they reach pre-algebra and higher mathematics courses.  • http://digitallearning.k12.wa.us/oer/mathresources.php • 7 supplemental math resource websites • http://mathsolutions.com/contact-us/speaker-presentations/ • Presentations from Math Solutions at the NCTM Conferences • https://mathreasoninginventory.com/ • Marilyn Burns: Math Reasoning Inventory • Info and videos to help us better understand students’ reasoning

  12. Spending $100 Students get $100 to spend (pretend). They may not spend the $100 on one single item. They make a list of three categories for spending. Students “shop” using sale papers and print outs of clothing, toys, games, etc. from online. Students round to the nearest dollar to create subtotals and a grand total. Students make a bar graph showing how they spent their money. Students share their strategies and budgeting ideas with the class.

  13. I have who has! • We played different versions of the game: • Order of operations • Percent fraction, decimal • Algebraic expressions • Multiplication Facts • Math Vocabulary

  14. Websites www.prepdog.org , which is really mostly a MAP preparation website www.mathisfun.com, which has a LOT of puzzles and higher-thinking questions for kids www.mathblaster.com, which has a lot of games that thinking puzzles that I know kids would like www.adaptedmind.com
