He was a multifaceted personality • educationist, freedom fighter, lawyer etc rolled into one. • In the early part of 20 century he wanted to establish a world class university. • At that time Nizam of Hyderabad was one of the richest persons in India. • When PanditMadan Mohan met him and asked for funds to establish a • Hindu University he was furious. • The folklore goes that the enraged Nizam threw his slipper on him, in disgust. • Unperturbed by Nizam’sbehaviour, Pandit went out in the open and started • auctioning the slipper. Since it was Nizam’s slipper many started bidding for it. • The bids were increasing to very high levels. • In order to ensure that some one does not buy the slipper for a sum that • is below his dignity, Nizam ordered to buy it at any cost. • Eventually Pandit realized a high sum. Thus began the collection and seeds • were sown for the birth of a famous university.
