  1. Newton’s Laws of Motion Friction and Inclines

  2. Friction • Kinetic Friction • Sliding friction creating when an object moves along a surface • Acts in the opposite direction of an objects velocity • The magnitude of the force of kinetic friction depends on the nature of the two sliding surfaces

  3. Coefficients of Friction

  4. Example A 10.0 kg box is pulled along a horizontal surface by a force, FP, of 40.0 N applied at a 30.0° angle. We assume a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.30. Calculate the acceleration.

  5. Inclines • What will happened when an object slides down a hill or ramp??? • To solve what happens, • x axis points along the incline • y axis is perpendicular to the incline • There will always be at least 2 forces; force of gravity & normal force

  6. Net Force on Inclined Planes • Difficult to determine since the forces are not in opposite directions • Must break into the components in order to determine the force

  7. Net Force on Inclined Planes To determine the net force, the perpendicular component of the force of gravity is directly opposite of the normal force

  8. Magnitude of the Components • To determine the magnitude of the components: • Parallel Force = m g sinΘ • This is the force to use to find acceleration • Perpendicular Force = m g cosΘ

  9. Example • What is the net force? • The net force is 5N down the incline

  10. Example 2 The free-body diagram shows the forces acting upon a 100-kg crate that is sliding down an inclined plane. The plane is inclined at an angle of 30 degrees. The coefficient of friction between the crate and the incline is 0.3. Determine the net force and acceleration of the crate.
