  1. Summary on Humility • Humility • Leads to… • Encouragement, Fellowship, Unity • Leads to… • Glory to Christ Jesus Our Lord!

  2. Philosophy and Empty Deception • Paul warns of “hollow and deceptive philosophy” in Colossians 2:8. • Philosophy means “love of wisdom.” • Philosophy is concerned with fundamental matters of existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.

  3. Philosophy and Empty Deception In what ways could philosophical thought invade or corrupt a Christian walk? Paul touches on stoic themes in several of his letters, and even quotes the stoic philosopher Aratus in Acts 17:28.

  4. Philosophy and Empty Deception • Philosophy can be an excellent entry point to inject the truth of God’s Word and the Gospel to an earnest seeker. • Paul’s qualifier: “rather than on Christ.” • Philosophy may contemplate the nature and truth of Jesus Christ, but shall not add to what is not there to begin with.

  5. …so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:2(b)-3

  6. Philosophy and Empty Deception God desires for you to grow in your understanding of His treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Christ Jesus. Maintain a diet in Scripture in this pursuit.

  7. Philosophy and Empty Deception • Practical Example: • Environmentalism • May be important to some Christians, not so important to others. • Can be a matter of personal observance. • Should not be a distraction or disqualifier to be in the fellowship of believers.

  8. Fullness of Deity • Colossians 2:9-10 • Jesus, in bodily form, was the fullness of deity. • He has in turn granted fullness to us. • There is no power or authority that He is not over.
