  3. 2. Why volunteering through corporates • CSR theory; HRM theory • What differentiates CV from other V? What values you offer: 2.1 Expert knowledge other than social work – business, manufacturing, building and construction, professional finance and governance knowledge … 2.2 Resources – manpower/talents, money, venues, sponsorship, distribution/sales channels, media … 2.3 New perspective or outlook – new dimension, new programme, new approach 2.4 Network and influence – 2.5 Synergy, cross-branding effect

  5. 3.2 Forces of stakeholders at work • History and story (culture, values) • Expectations, goals (mindset, expressed and hidden) • Ways of doing things, rules and regulations, decision making process, limitations, professional autonomy vs. managerialism • Use of language, communication styles … • Understanding of the ‘problem’, self perception • Ownership and engagement • Hidden competition …… etc. • Differences in status and power Leading to differences, contradiction, conflicts, uncomfortable, unhappy

  6. 3.3 Walking with your corporate volunteers • Large & SME – CV is open to all, big and small; start where you feel ready and comfortable … • Point – line – sphere matching • CV management: platforms / database: SWD and Government; business sector; NGO sector; media; e-channels

  7. 4. To maximize satisfaction in all stakeholders 4.1 Social work or business sector approach: Goal and expectation clarification Setting Contract (target, time frame, respective duties …) Review Shared goal & vision Relationship building (contractual; trust; affection …)

  8. 4.2 Walking together: Different levels • Level 1: same direction; but just grabbing what each wants; 各取所需; 求同存異 • Level 2: shared passion; 互相包容; 互諒互讓 • Level 3: shared vision; 互相尊重; 互相扶持; 互相欣賞

For long our team has been working hard to move our staff to join volunteer activities and the outcome is not as successful as expected. However, this time is different. I was really impressed and moved by the involvement of our staff. Not only by the number of volunteers we gathered, but by the dedication as well. We all spent our sparetime to make the clothes in our own will, during lunch hour, our volunteers make the clothes while talking with EM workers about how to stitch better. I am very touched by the professionalism, passion, participation and persistent hardwork of all our trainers. I have learnt a lot from them, not only the professional part which is also so applicable to my everyday work in the commercial field. It is important that we bring a dream to the students, and facilitate the trainees to help the students make it come true one day. ” 6.
