  1. Introducing Technology Unit 1

  2. Technology Video We will watch a short video to introduce you to the term “technology.” You will not be required to write anything, but pay attention, because we will discuss the video. What is technology?

  3. Technology vs. Science • Technology • The study of the application of knowledge, creativity, and resources to solve problems and extend human potential • TECHNOLOGY = MAN-MADE, SOLVES PROBLEMS • Science • The study of the natural world through observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanations TPS Activity: Write an example of technology and an example of science in your EDJ.

  4. Needs and Wants • Need – Something you must have to survive • Want – Something to make things easier or solve problems • Examples of NEEDS? • Examples of WANTS?

  5. Impact and Society • Impact • The effect or influence of one thing on another • Some impacts are anticipated, and others are unanticipated • Examples? • Society • Relationships among groups of humans • Examples?

  6. Products • A tangible artifact produced by means of either human or mechanical work, or by biological or chemical processes • Examples? Is all technology a product?

  7. Vocabulary Activity • Please tape your vocabulary list in to your EDJ • You will complete the Vocabulary Wheel for each term. You may work with a partner, but must complete your own wheel. • For each term, include the following: • Definition, in your own words • Sketch of an example • Upon completion – cut/tape/glue in to your EDJ

  8. Exit Ticket • On a scrap slip of paper, write down the definition of TECHNOLOGY in your own words • Include your name • Place your slip of paper in to one of the folders on the door based on how well you feel you understand the definition of the term TECHNOLOGY

  9. Think, Pair, Share • 2 minutes – THINK about how you could categorize technology. Write down your categories in your EDJ. • 2 minutes – PAIR with your neighbor and discuss. • 1 minute – SHARE with the class.

  10. The Designed World Systems • What is the Designed World? • Changes humans have made to the natural world to fulfill our needs and wants • Designed World Systems = Technology Categories • Seven different categories

  11. Agricultural and Biotechnology • Technology used to create, improve, or modify plants, animals, and microorganisms • Examples?

  12. Construction Technology • Technology used in designing and constructing structures such as houses, commercial buildings, agricultural facilities, roads, and bridges • Examples?

  13. Energy and Power Technology • Technology used to convert, process, or transmit energy • Examples?

  14. Information and Communication Technology • Technology used for gathering, organizing, and reporting data so it is useful to people • Examples?

  15. Manufacturing Technology • Technology used to convert raw materials into finished products, especially in large quantities • Examples?

  16. Medical Technology • Technology used to prevent, diagnose, and treat illnesses and injuries • Examples?

  17. Transportation Technology • Technology that moves passengers or goods from one place to another • Examples?

  18. Designed World Systems Warm Up • Pick one of the Designed World Systems and list 3 examples of technologies that would fall under that category • Complete this assignment in your EDJ ** If you were absent, get notes from a friend **

  19. The Designed World Systems Poster • Students (divided into groups) are to produce a creative poster of the sevenDesigned World Systems using pictures from the internet or their own drawings • Include the definition for each system IN YOUR OWN WORDS! • Try to include more than one example for each system!! • The posters will be discussed when completed.

  20. Extension Activity • Which of the following Designed World Systems would you like to learn more about? Let’s take a class vote! • Agriculture and Biotechnologies • Construction Technology • Energy and Power Technology • Information and Communication Technology • Medical Technology • Manufacturing Technology • Transportation Technology

  21. Warm Up – Think, Pair, Share • Look back at the definitions for technology, impact, and society. • How does technology impact society? • Answer this in your EDJ • You have 2 minutes

  22. Think about this… • You’re living in the Stone Age • a period early in the development of human cultures when tools were made of stone and bone. Clothing consisted of animal skins or fabrics woven from threads derived from plant fibers. • Your skirt ripped! • How would you fix this? • Please write your ideas in your EDJ

  23. Okay, you’re back in 2018! • How would you fix your clothing now? • Sewing machine • Tape • Needle/Thread • Extra clothing • Safety pin

  24. Group Activity • Get into groups of 2 or 3. • Think of 5 important technological inventions/innovations that have been created within the past 50 years. • For each technology, explain how the invention or innovation has changed the world. • Write this in your EDJ!

  25. Answer these please…in your EDJ • How has technology changed society? • What are some positive, desirable, or wanted outcomes of technology? • What are some negative, undesirable, or unwanted outcomes of technology? Answers should be in complete sentences and you should write at least 3 sentences for each question. Please use examples to back up your statements!

  26. Warm Up – Important Inventions Answer the following question in your EDJ: What inventions have had an impact on your life?

  27. Invention Cards • Each group will research as many inventions as they can find within their assigned system. • For each invention, they should create an "invention card" with a picture (drawn or printed) of the invention and the following facts: • Name of invention • Name of inventor • Year it was invented • How does it help people?

  28. Example Invention Card The Airplane Invented by the Wilbur Wright in 1903. The airplane helps people by allowing them to get to and from places quickly and safely.

  29. Warm Up • In your own words, describe the meaning on “trend” • Trend – patterns of technological activities that show a tendency or take a general direction • Used to help decide if a product or system should be used • When creating new technology, why is it important to identify trends and monitor potential consequences of technological development?

  30. Robots vs. Humans • Video • Are Robots Hurting Job Growth? • Discussion • What tasks are currently being completed by robots? • What are some futuristic changes we might see in society involving robots? • What is an example of a technology that is currently changing? • What are some futuristic changes we might see in agricultural technology? In manufacturing technology? In construction technology? How about the other areas of the Designed World?

  31. Technology In the Future Identify a technology used today… • Predict changes in how it will be used within the next 100 years • Explain how these changes will impact society • Explain how society will influence these changes Answers should be in complete sentences.
