  2. Essential Vocabulary • Notochord– long supporting rod that runs through a chordate’s body just below the nerve cord.

  3. Essential Vocabulary • Pharyngeal slits – structures in the throat (pharynx) region that develop into gillsthat are used for gas exchange.

  4. Essential Vocabulary • Metabolism – all the chemical reactions that occur within an organism. • Ectothermic - animal that has a variable body temperature and derives its heat from external sources.

  5. Essential Vocabulary • Endothermic – animals maintain a constant body temperature and is not dependent on the environmental temperature.
