  1. Using Pioneer Library for Research EBSCO

  2. Accessing Pioneer • Pioneer Library is a valuable research resource and will be used in this class • There is a link to Pioneer on the left hand side of your EHS home page

  3. Password You can link directly to the site from EHS or you can type in http://pioneer.uen.org Log in name: pioneer Password: friend

  4. Excellent Resources • The page that comes up will look like this • For this class, we will be using EBSCO and SIRS Issues Researcher

  5. Using EBSCO • EBSCO is a great site for research • This is the first screen you will come to • When researching a topic, click on the “College/University” Database

  6. Using EBSCO • The next screen can be a little confusing • This is a list of all databases that you can search. • If you have a really specific topic, you can click on certain links • I often “Select All” when beginning but it may slow down the search

  7. Using EBSCO • This slide is where to begin your actual “search” • You need to click the “Full Text” box or you will only get summaries of research articles

  8. Using EBSCO • The next step can be the most difficult • You need to enter your search terms • This database is so big that you need to be very specific to get helpful results • Use quotation marks to search for specific phrases • I used “increasing” and “high school graduation rate” to narrow my search

  9. Using EBSCO • At this point, your search results will appear • On the left hand side of the page, you can refine your search

  10. Using EBSCO Good research is vital to good writing Spend time getting the most valuable and helpful resources for your topic Writing will be much easier with good resources, don’t rush through this process
