  1. The Burden of Stroke in Texas  Weihua Li, MD, MPH, MS, Jane Osmond, MPH, RRT, Cardiovascular Health & Wellness Program; Texas Department of State Health Services Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Texas and the leading cause of serious long-team disability in adults. In 2009, about 400,000 Texas adults were diagnosed with stroke. The overall age-adjusted mortality rate for stroke in Texas declined significantly between 1999 and 2006. About 14% of Texas adults do not know to call 911 in the event of heart attack or stroke. Recognizing the sign and symptoms of stroke and calling 911 is critical in saving and reducing disability.
